4 Stars for the Yeti for being an awesome cooler. Can't give it 5 stars because $270 for a cooler is ridiculous.
Two day cooler test of the most popular coolers. Tested models include
YETI Hopper 20 Portable
Polar Bear Coolers H2O Cooler
Polar Bear Coolers 24 Pack Soft Cooler
AO Coolers Carbon Soft Cooler
AO Coolers Silver 24 Pack
Each cooler had a 12 lb bag of ice dumped into it after sitting on the balcony for a few hours to stabilize temps. Bags were opened and checked every 12 hours, although I was expecting the test to last longer. Temps were in the 80s in the day and 40s at night. Early in the second day (36 hours) all coolers had some ice left, I weighed it and the Yeti had almost 5lbs left, the Polar 24 pack had 3.5 lbs, the Polar H20 had 3 lbs, the AO Carbon had almost 3 lbs and the AO regular had 2 lbs.
Twelve hours later, there was only ice left in the Yeti so I checked temps of the other bags. Yeti 29.6, Polar h20 53.8, Polar 24 pack 48.7, Ao vinyl 57.8, Ao carbon, 50.5. The 47 degrees of the inexpensive Polar 24 pack is impressive. That’s much cooler than the other ones, and would keep food cooler much longer. It isn’t quite the Yeti, but it’s $80 vs $270. The others were all basically failures. I’m surprised at how poorly the Polar H20 cooler worked, the construction seemed impressive.
I also checked to see if they would handle a spill. On the side, the Yeti is almost sealed, just a tiny leak. ALL of the others just pour water out the zipper with no problem.
If there are any other coolers to consider, (besides the Rtic which is not worth the ordering risk during a lawsuit), I’d like to know and test. For now, I’m keeping the Polar 24 pack.
Thanks!
