Easy to set-up, works great with my iPhone and iPad (as well as my laptop), pictures look pretty good, but it is fairly noisy
Epson makes reliable printers. I've had a few, and they've all worked well. This one is no exception.
It is a bit smaller than the other Epson printers I've owned. It's designed, really, for personal use by a single user or small family. It would be ideal for a student dorm. (It is a bit noisier than some printers I've used, so roommates might complain if you print very late at night ... or, more likely, early in the morning.)
It's easy to set up. Just plug it in, remove all the tape, turn it on, install the ink cartridges, and then let it calibrate for a few minutes. Once that was done I set it up on my local network (easy to do using the LCD screen and buttons on the front of the printer), then found the "Epson iPrint" app on the Apple store for my iPhone and iPad. I opened the app, let it find my printer on the network and it was ready to print. Obviously, you can print any documents or photos stored on your phone or tablet -- what I was happily surprised to find is that you can also use the app to hook up to various online storage sites like Box, Dropbox, Evernote, GoogleDrive and Microsoft OneNote (those were just the options it gave me, because I have all of those linked to my phone but I assume there are other possibilities). Just enter your password and give the app access and then you can print any of those docs. That's a real boon, since I do most of my work-related document editing on GoogleDrive and Dropbox.
After I'd done that, I also downloaded the driver from the website and set up the scanner and the driver on my laptop. It does come with a disk that you can use to install the driver on Macs or PCs but since my Macbook Pro doesn't have a disk drive I just googled "Epson XP-420 Driver" and got to the right place in seconds. A few minutes later I was ready to go on my laptop as well.
Scanning works well. Printing works great. So does copying. Photo printing is pretty good. Not "photo quality" to my eyes, but if you use photo paper it's pretty close.
This is a good small printer that does pretty much anything you'd need. What I like about it most is that it was so easy to set up on my phone and tablet, since more and more often I use those to access documents and it's easy to print anything I have available through my cloud accounts without any hassle. Recommended.
