Guide to Appreciating This Laptop
This is an absolutely amazing laptop IF you have experience with computer parts ;). I'll cover an area of Pros and Cons and then some Recommendations (I did these myself). I bought this laptop for $799 during Black Friday sales.(i7-6700HQ, Nvidia GTX 960M, 15.6") IMPORTANT UPDATE: Acer released a new BIOS update for this laptop :) it now supports all four lanes for pcie x4 NVMe SSD's are supported now! Attached is a picture of the speeds I get using CrystalDisk. No more 1.5 GB/s cap, it is at the proper 2.5 GB/s, MONSTER! TO be honest however, I do not notice any edge of my seat speeds that "wow" me, but wow is this laptop fast regardless. Pros: -Nvidia GTX 960M. Come on, really? Can you get such a graphics card in a laptop for this low of a price? Not only that, it doesn't feel specifically like a gaming laptop because it's light too! -Light for a gaming laptop (5.1 pounds) -Sleek, very attractive backlit keyboard along with a red line that lights up under the silver "Acer Aspire V Nitro" logo under the monitor -i7 Skylake processor. Newest generation processor so it's futureproof and gives you no worries about keeping it for a while. 6700HQ is one of the best processors you can get for a lightweight gaming laptop and if you're on a budget looking for a nice simple gaming laptop, this is one of the attractive features -IPS Monitor with 1920x1080 resolution -Comes with 8 GB of RAM, 2133 mHz DDR4. 8 GB is usually more than you need but there are exceptions for laptops because they do slow down -Always sounds great, not loud at all! Cons: -Not mod friendly..at all. HAHA but it's alright as long as you give yourself a lot of time and the proper screwdrivers. Take your time when opening this up, the motherboard is surprisingly fragile. Disassembly is basic enough, however. -Battery life is not great, as expected of a gaming laptop. Could probably get 4 hours on power saver mode, doing lightweight work. -Non-replaceable battery. -Seems to be a little on the hot side for the CPU and GPU. -Needs an SSD -Wi-Fi has issues with 5.0 GHz I believe? Recommendations: -Buy more ram, you will appreciate the performance boost. I personally bought the Kingston Technology HyperX Impact 16GB Kit, 2400 mHz. -Buy an SSD. I bought the 950 Pro 512 GB. Also bought an 850 Pro 256 GB, fits right in simply -Buy the Killer CUK Doubleshot Wireless-AC 1525 if you want the 5.0 GHz network connections. Very important -If you are scared of the heat problems, buy some Antec Nano Diamond Thermal Compound Formula 7 and apply on the two spots under the heatsinks Summary: All in all, I love this laptop. Display is beautiful, aesthetics are gorgeous. The laptop screams power, affordability, sleekness, and comfort. You do want to at least replace it with an SSD for gaming-worthy performance, but that's the only necessity in my opinion. I installed my new parts right away and it took me a couple of hours as I was being very careful. It booted up nicely and I fell in love. Windows 10 does have some battery issues I believe, it does kill the battery life, but hey, how much more can you ask for? Best gaming laptop in the price range. GUIDE TO DISASSEMBLE: 1) Unscrew all bottom screws 2) Open laptop 3) Use a card to pick out the keyboard top 4) LIFT LIGHTLY so you don't hurt the cable ribbons, and remove them from the motherboard 5) Remove the cable at the top of the keyboard from the motherboard 6) SSD slots and Wi-Fi card are easily accessible from this point on. 7) UNHOOK ALL CONNECTIONS, simple enough right? SO BE CAREFUL 8) You don't have to unlace the wi-fi cable but do put it to the side 9) Unscrew two screws, the ones located on the fans 10) Pull the motherboard to the left, then down, the pull up to remove it. This is to make the ports come out of the laptop frame safely. 11) The RAM is now accessible from this point on 12) Remove the screws from the heatsink in THE NUMBERED ORDER THEY ARE PUT. (Small numbers next to each screw). MAKE SURE TO PUT THEM BACK IN THE SAME ORDER 13) Clean the thermal paste already applied, and apply new thermal paste! 14) Close her up and call her a beauty :)
