Skeptical at first - Turned out to be a great purchase
I was a little worried about whether or not this test would be worth it. For the price, it seemed very expensive at first and I've had some friends of mine say these tests are "bogus" and really just random guesses to see your money. However, after some research, we seemed trusting in Wisdom Panel, since they have been validated by the Ostrander lab at NHGRI, which is a leading research group in canine genetics. After getting the results, we were very happy with this purchase. People comment all the time on our family dog, as they are very curious at what breeds he has in him. Multiple vets have given us different guesses, and we've always wanted to find out what he truly is. Finally, we know! (Somewhat, atleast) The known breeds found in the test were Labrador Retriever, Staffordshire Bull Terrior, Miniture Wire Haired Dachshund, and Border Collie, which really surprised us at first, but thinking about it, it really made sense. We guessed he had some lab or pit-bull in him, but he has a longer body which would make sense to have Dachshund in him. Border Collie threw me off but his eyes/smile look very similar, and his personality is very characteristic of a herding dog like a Collie. 4 of the 8 great grandparents were mixed breeds the test could not determine. However, they give you a statistical likelihood ranking dog groups the mixed breeds are most likely to come from, in order of most likely to least, which is at-least somewhat informative. They also provided us a MDR1 screening result, which apparently is a common mutation regarding drug sensitivity in herding dogs. We didn't know this would even be provided, but is great information to pass to your vets!
As far as the test goes, it's very simple to do. You will have two swabs to use. One I rubbed pretty vigorously on his cheeks, the other i got a big glob of his saliva in the bristles after rubbing on the other side of his mouth. Seal it up, and send it on its way. Be sure to follow the instructions and do this at a time where your dog hasn't been exposed to toys, food, or other dogs for a few hours. He sleeps in our bedroom, so we did the test first thing in the morning while he was still sleeping. Given our results, I recommend doing this if your able to.
Overall, very happy with the results. Not providing a picture at all, I trust the results given that the identified breeds make sense in terms of his appearance and personality. I was skeptical at first, but am very happy I decided to give this a shot!
