A Classy Unit - Accurate - Easy Setup
La Crosse products have very slowly been improving in quality over the years, this item seems to be better than most of their prior efforts. I've owned, and still own, a lot of different weather stations, and I can quantify this accordingly. My temperature measurements were made against a laser probe and a high-end Netatmo reference unit, both with know accuracies to .5F. The exterior sensor was measured at six hour intervals over a period of 24 hours. It is accurate to within 1.4F, well within specs for a consumer home unit. The humidity is low by about -7%, this is always a difficult measure to take mechanically. The "error" is acceptable and not something to worry about. Smiles: The display is LARGE, colorful, and easy to read from a distance. The radio controlled time was captured almost as soon as the batteries were installed. My unit registers five full bars from the remote sensor, which is under a balcony eave, 30' away, and the signal has to penetrate two walls. It is completely surrounded by electronic equipment with no interference noted. Simple setup, essentially a "plug 'n play" type deal. Instructions are satisfactory, but just barely so. Has a three position fold out stand and also mounts flush against the wall Frowns: The controls you are most likely to use, brightness, hi/low temp, dew point, are on the rear side of the unit, out of sight and difficult to locate by touch. A design failing for which a star is deducted. The display will quickly fade if the unit is much above or below eye level. This has been noted by a number of reviewers. If you can't face this display pretty much straight on don't buy it, you won't be happy. Sensor placement considerations: If at all possible, place the sensor on the north side of a house, under an eave where it won't be subject to direct sunlight or precipitation. My installation is of necessity facing south (apartment) and there's no doubt that an a buildup of heat on the balcony concrete effects the reading occasionally. If you want to get a truly accurate picture of your sensor, wait until it's a cloudy, rainy or snowy day, the sensor will be less subject to sunlight variations and you will be surprised how closely the reading will correspond with local weather service and other station readings. I have a more complex ventilated shelter for other sensors, if anybody's interested drop me a comment. This unit may be too bright for a bedroom installation. Mine is installed using a cheap, simple timer which shuts it off automatically at night and turns it back on in the morning. I have not been able to evaluate the forecast feature, as it requires about 30 days to achieve "accuracy," so-called, of about 70%. Don't plan a family picnic around it. Conclusion: A handsome unit, its readings are well within acceptable tolerances for a consumer weather unit, the "atomic" clock works well and the remote signal is powerful. I was able to buy this for $20 at a national shopping club, so check around.
