High-end looks, low-end price, be realistic in your expectations.
I'm torn between 3-4 stars. As far as looks go, its a 5 star product. It seems its somewhere between Ultra and Mid-century modern. The color as others have stated isn't a bright Apple store white, but in fact more of an off, vanilla. With that said this futon is 4 feet away from a stark bright white desk but neither piece looks out of place, also incandescent lighting will cast enough of a warm light on the room that they almost become the same color. From an assembly standpoint I'd say its a 3 or a 4 depending upon when it comes time to flip it right side up. The 2 halves are tied together via a standard hinge and flipping it over by yourself can be a chore as there is so much flex it seems as if its going to break. 2 people flipping at the same time solves the issue but it can be done by yourself as well, you just can't toss it on its feet is all I'm saying. The feet, while metal, are a VERY thin gauge tubing. I can understand as other people have said the legs have snapped at the welds why. To avoid that try not to do the typical sitting adjustment where you just suddenly thrust or scoot your body to change sitting position, I'd imagine that is what puts the lateral torque that causes welds to break, sideways. Just a thicker gauge metal would resolve any worries. Not really sure how it could be reinforced other than the owner adding wood feet in other places, but that will bring me to my next point. So far I think I'm 3-4 weeks in to ownership, and while there is no sagging to the FRAME as of yet, I can see where there is a possibility for it with long term use. Just for the sake of disclosure I have this product in my front office/video game room at home, there might be a week where I don't even go in there, let alone sit down, but then there will be spurts like the last 2 weeks I have laid on this for 4 hours every night playing xbox. If this item was used as a daily living room sofa with multiple people at a time I think it would be much more short lived than the sporadic use mine gets. I am 5'11ish I guess and 210lbs. I feel it is comfortable as long as you understand what it is, its not some super cushy sofa your going to sink down into watching Netflix for 12 hours. The best way to describe the cushion/padding of this is like a waiting room chair or seats at the movie theater. It has cushion to it, but it is a firm cushion. It is not the most comfortable but it is a lot better than a solid plastic or wood chair with no cushion at all. In futon mode I think it would be the perfect foundation to put a twin or full size air mattress on for an occasional spur of the moment guest bed. Sleeping on it bare for a full night might be a stretch but for an occasional afternoon nap, I had no issues the one time I tried it. I don't get people that expect futons to be a full time primary bed and want the comfort of a tempurpedic, a futon is the same void as a daybed, occasional sleeping for naps or temporary guests without taking up the size of a full time dedicated framed mattress bed. Now as far as the material, the faux leather/pleather looks nice, but it is very very, very, very, thin. You can tell by just pushing your finger into it how thin it is. because of this, I can say dogs, cats, and children standing on this could destroy it in about 10 minutes. it is just such a thin, soft material, that I just honestly feel that the covering will wear out well before the frame, cushioning, etc. I have several faux leather ottomans from Target and they are a much thicker, resilient material than this. The thinness of the covering will also show stretching pretty fast, there is a side that has more wrinkles than the other from just the occasional use. However the tufted design tends to hide it, as well as a few pillows that will be on there anyway. Sorry for such a long review however, I am always glad to see thorough review for items I am considering.
Bottom line is this is an amazing looking piece, that looks much more expensive than it is. Not recommended as full time sofa or bed. Design has its flaws but a little common sense and realistic expectation of its price and what it is intended for go a long way. Not recommended for children or pets as climbing on it could tear the thin material pretty easily. Comfort is so-so, but that is the nature of futons. For the price it is great so far, I would buy again. The manufacturer should look at increasing gauge of tubing used for feet, as well as a much thicker covering on par with similar faux leather items from big box stores. I will also say that due to the nature of this product being mass produced, with the materials used, I can see where it would be pretty easy to get a lemon or one with issues. I wish they made a matching armless barcelona style chair/ottoman to go with this as matching the off white color and matteness of the white could be an issue with furniture placed directly against it. Overall I got this for $189 and am satisfied with it at that price, and would still be happy up to $250. Anything after that they would need to significantly upgrade materials used. There just isn't much that compares to this high end looking design, at this low of a price.
