For perfectionists or just plain neat-freaks:
The perfect method for a pristine cat bathroom: 1. High walls and OPEN top, like this litter box. Don't pay for features that don’t help. For example, A COVERED litter box only REINFORCES HUMAN DENIAL, and “sifting” boxes are harder work. Martha Stewart does not know best in this case. 2. Use FLUSHABLE litter such as World’s Best (made from corn) or Sweat Scoop (made from wheat). Clay litter is harmful because dust can clump in cat’s airways. KEEP LITTER DEPTH MORE THAN 3 INCHES, and you will end up (surprisingly) using LESS cat litter because at this depth, moisture from all directions clumps around the waste (urine balls never touch the sides of the box!). Once you scoop and flush the litter, the odors depart too. 3. Make a HABIT of scooping out and flushing every time you enter the bathroom you will NEVER need any odor-control. As a scientist who loves cats, I advocate employing a law of physics: after you scoop out litter balls, shake the litter box back and forth horizontally several times. This will cause the finer particles to (surprisingly) fall toward the bottom of the litter pan AWAY from your cat’s respiratory system and TOWARD the bottom where you need the most clumping power. Your litter box will be fit for close-up in Better Homes and Gardens. 4. For one or two cats, no need to use more floor space. This medium-size box is plenty, as long as you scoop every time you enter the bathroom. 5. Add a litter-catching mat (the best is patent-pending by Pawkin). Perfect!
