Chance at a New Life
I’ve always been a fat kid growing up and when I was in high school in 2005 I was 300lbs. My mom turned into a type 1 diabetic in her early 30s and went into a coma for two weeks, so over the years I learned about diabetes and the effects of the disease. In 2015/16 I noticed I was starting to experience these side-effects and went to the doctor. I was 330lbs and the doctor misdiagnosed me as Type 2 diabetic. I say misdiagnosed because in the course of 2 years I lost the weight with the help of medication, diet and exercise yet my sugar was still averaging in the 180s and higher. I went from 330lbs to 185lbs. The last few months before my incident I was experiencing waves of nausea. I'm a Medical Lab Scientist and was testing my ketones and maxed out the rang every time. I mention this to my doctor but she insisted it was due to the medication and that it was expected. In 2018 at age 32 I was rushed to the ER where I was diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic. I was in DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis) however, my blood sugar was only in the 180. The doctors and nurses were stumped because commonly DKA in type 1 diabetics is associated with high blood sugars closer to the 1000s. Come to find out the sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor medication is strictly meant for type 2 diabetics and can trigger DKA in type 1 patients, which I was taking. After spending 3 days in the ICU to get my acid blood levels and labs within normal range I was sent home on insulin. I was devastated knowing that I would not be able to reverse type 2 and go back to normal. That in fact I was never type 2, insulin resistant. I was type 1.5, where my pancreas slowly stopped producing insulin over the course of two years before my body finally went into DKA. Once I was out of the hospital I was able to eat foods normally again. The dietician recommended I eat 60 grams of carbs per meal 3x a day with snacks in between. Over the course of 4 months I gained 100lbs back due to my body switching from ketosis to burning sugar. Then after another year I had gained all my weight back and surpassed it reaching 400lbs. I struggled with everyday routines like tying my shoes or washing myself. I was disgusted with myself for allowing this weight gain and decrease in health. As of two weeks ago I threw out everything I thought I knew about the standard American diet and have incorporated the knowledge of you Dr. Berry and the proper human diet I should have been eating from the very beginning. Being a health professional myself working as a MLS it sickens me to finally understand the corruption with big pharma, FDA, and the marketing that goes along with food and prescription medicine. The powers are too big for any one person to fight, however, I can at least work on fixing the damage I’ve caused to myself and educate the loved ones around me. In two weeks I went from a 180 avg glucose down to 110, and it is continuing to lower as I transition completely over to carnovior. I've also lost 15lbs and have stopped taking my muscle spasm, naproxen, atrovastin, and zoloft medications., I only take insulin and wellbutrin now. I hope you read this story about me and I'll be glad to share my progress as I go. I'm performing a lab experiment on myself and I will not cheat as I want this to be an accurate representation of living on a proper human diet. Thank you Dr Berry for giving me another chance on life at age 36.
