A South African movie for the world.
I just had to add my two cents regarding this movie. I am completely amazed at all the negative reviews of this cinematic achievement! Almost all of them are viewed through American and UK sensibilities. One case in point, is Hugh Jackman's character. I am from South Africa and know many types of people exactly like the character Jackman plays, and dress like Jackman's character daily. Those same people are former defense force and now excell in various forms of engineering and/or farming. Sigourney Weaver's character is exactly the type of corporate approach in South Africa in which the CEO'S and executives simply don't care about anyone or anything or purpose other that profit and making themselves look good. The criticism of the violence in the movie is born of ignorance, as in South Africa, crime and violence is simply an everyday occurrence. I'm not saying it is right or making any excuses for it, but it's simply there. And that's basically the message that Blomkamp is delivering here as well as in Elysium, is that there is always going to be wrongs and inequalities when there is a divide of Haves and Have-nots. Chappie focuses more on the point that strong-arm policing does not fix the problems stemming from inequality. The action set pieces and visual effects no one can fault. He is clearly making his mark on the scene. The story, while reminiscent of previous sci-fi films it draws inspiration from, is crafted into a new and unique story. Chappie has definitely left his mark on audiences much like the T-800, Johnny 5, Michael Corleone and countless cinematic icons. Visually, the colour palette and sharpness is crisp. Cinematography is done in a way that makes you view the onscreen events in a different way than you normally would any standard, paint by numbers Hollywood action vehicle. The sound is nice and crisp, dialogue does not get drowned out by the booming hip hop beats. The techno soundtrack adds the perfect layer of character to the narrative as well, and surround sounds are distinctive. The action scenes are an aural pleasure. The only gripe I have was Die Antwoord. It was a bit too much focus on them. All in all, Chappie is a fantastic movie! No, it's an event! It's not a Hollywood movie shot in an exotic location, it's a South African movie, with a message for the humanity. The blu ray already has a spot reserved in my collection.
