For real estate/architecture - Major pro: Excellent edge-to-edge sharpness. Minor cons: flares/ghosts easily, barrel distortion
I shoot a lot of real estate, and had been using the Canon 10-22mm as my main lens. After reading Ken Rockwell's glowing review on the 10-18mm, I thought I'd try it out. My first day with the new lens, I noticed a major drawback, which is that it flares very easily when photographing light sources. "Ghosting" may be the more appropriate term - you'll see green blobs show up underneath direct light sources, especially chandeliers or any kind of bare light source. (See attached bedroom picture.) It took me a little longer to notice the next drawback, but reviewing my photos after shoots, I was seeing that the lens has considerable barrel distortion in certain shots, probably mostly at the wider focal lengths. Some photos have a slight fisheye bulge to them where straight lines appear to curve. The attached picture of the bedroom was taken at 11mm - you can see the distortion on the door on the right edge. The one very nice advantage it has over the 10-22mm is that is more consistently sharp from edge to edge across all focal lengths. I'd always get a few shots with my 10-22 that really faded away into dullness on one side, but this never happens with the 10-18mm.
