These baskets will CHANGE YOUR LIFE. (With some caveats)
I use these baskets with the Topeak rear rack to great success. Things you need to know off the bat: -The mounting hardware is useless. I attached mine with micro hose clamps from Precision Brand. NOTE: I used the "micro" hose clamps, and they worked, with a lot of elbow grease -- but it might be easier with the larger size. Then again, maybe not, I don't know. Anyway, I used five hose clamps on each side and I think it's going to be a LONG time before these baskets go anywhere. -The basket-closing hooks are absolutely impossible to move using your bare hands -- at least if you mount your baskets the way I did, maybe there is more torque going on than the hooks are designed for. Wald could put "wings" on the backs of the hooks if they want to make them a little more ergonomic, but they didn't. I simply use mini bungee cords from this set to hold them closed. It works out because when I want to fold the basket down, I remove the bungee cords, and then I can use them to hold down whatever I put in the basket! -One guy on here said his baskets are already showing signs of rust. Mine are in a few places, but I don't think they're going to fall apart any time soon. OK now you might be wondering. WHY is the product worth 4 stars after all that negative information?: -You can just THROW STUFF IN YOUR BASKETS and go. While the next bike nerd is still hooking up his $200 panniers, you already have a basket full of library books and you're on the road. While the next guy is trying to decide whether he should leave said panniers on his bike or carry them around all day, you have already returned those books to the library and are half-way to your autie's house. -There are a gazillion bike gizmos that are made completely irrelevant by having baskets on your bike. Panniers? Seat bags? Frame mounts for (extra) water bottles, pumps, U-Locks, etc.? Never mind all that stuff. Just load up a small backpack, reusable shopping bag, drawstring bag, or fanny pack with everything you need for your day or week - including flat tire tools, U-Lock, extra water, wallet, food, WHATEVER - and throw it in the basket, maybe covering it with a couple of bungee cords. -I am almost always carrying around my Fahgettaboutit U-Lock and my cheap combination cable lock (which I use to secure my wheels). Storing the U-Lock in a basket allows me to completely forget about the weight while I am riding, plus I don't have to worry about it falling out of inferior brackets. As a bonus, I can use the U-Lock as a weight to make extra sure that nothing falls out of the basket. -The base dimensions match that of a standard shopping bag, which coincidentally happens to be the same dimensions of a standard styrofoam TAKE OUT CONTAINER. As a result, these baskets are incredible for getting carry-out orders. Your food will sit snugly in the bottom of the basket without moving until you are ready to eat. Incredible!!! NOTE: I actually ordered my Wald 582 baskets from this product listing which at the present time presents a better price for the pair. When ordering your baskets make sure you know whether you are ordering 1 or 2. Chances are you want 2.
