Fair, honest review.
So, if you want an honest review, you're looking at the right one. I'm just an average Joe. I love technology, and love having the latest and greatest. I have used radar detectors for over 15 years. I know what detectors are complete junk, and which ones are worth the money. There is a police officer that likes to sit on the interstate almost daily, and he runs K and KA band. He's typically in about the same spot. To be honest, this picks him up as well as the 8500 X50 I owned. I have yet to see this magical distance that these people with a stake in trying to sell you one of these detectors try to tell you. They will tell you that this will blow the X50 out of the water. Not so sure about that. I've had plenty of real life encounters since purchasing this unit. Things I like- same sensitivity as what I am used to. The OLED is a nice change from the V1 and X50 ive owned. I like the fact you can pick your own tones for radar bands. It has the nice mute button power cord I'm used to. Safer than reaching up to the windshield to mute it. The filtering on it is pretty good with out K band filter on. Even with the filter on, it still activates/falses at nearly all the same locations my X50 and V1 used to. So I just leave the filters off except for TSR rejection. Used to falses in the same spots anyway, so it really doesn't bother me. I don't believe in using GPS to lockout. There are police in my town that literally sit where I pick up the standard false signal and run radar. Locking out with GPS could really come back to bite you. It is nice to see if multiple bands of radar are hitting you, which bands and how strong they each are. Similar to the Escort "expert mode." Honestly, range wise, I haven't witnessed anything with the R1 that has been exponentially better than the previous detectors I've owned from Escort and V1. And honestly, I picked up both police K and KA (all variations) with those detectors from quite the impressive distance. If someone who previously owned a crappy detector purchased this, they are of course going to love the range. It would have gotten all 5 stars if it blew me away like all the reviewers with a financial incentive to talk this up will state. If I do have some unusually massive extreme range detection with this R1 in the future, I will update the review.
