Buy and hand out to homeless
What a sad time here in NYC. During the pandemic, we see an increase in homeless people helplessly wandering around trying to find a place to sleep. Usually they are old men and women that would be victimized in the shelters. It is heartbreaking, but you can do your part to at least make sure they don't freeze to death. Buy a bunch of these and offer them to anyone you see sleeping on the ground.
My rules of outreach (if you care):
1) Don't make them feel even worse while you're helping them (try to just neutrally and nonchalantly approach and say 'would you like this emergency foil blanket? you can wrap it around you to keep out the cold'). Walk away if they say no. Don't get offended if they don't want help or say thanks, or if they curse at you. Try not to talk down to them like you're talking to a kid, which I do see people do sometimes. Dress humbly, no one needs to see your gucci bag when they're laying on the sidewalk. There's an immense power difference here and be aware of how you come across. If you're offended by me saying these things, then don't do outreach.
2) Actually this should be #1. Don't take pictures. You'd think people would know this already, but no...everyone wants their instagram cred for being ' a good person'. Be an anonymous helper.
3) Think carefully before you decide to give money. If they need food, or coffee or socks, etc, buy it instead. Giving money may feel good to you but it either goes to substances or it makes that person a target for mugging by other homeless or junkies.
4) Call your reps. The city should be taking care of these people, not us. All the taxes we pay (esp NYC) should have these people covered.
5) When you get back into your nice warm home, thank yourself. You did a tiny little bit that may have made a big difference.
