Hemp vs. Cotton
This review is not intended to be for those trying to decide on weather or not to purchase an acupressure mat. There are plenty of reviews fitting that category. I am assuming you have made the choice (the correct choice in my opinion) to buy a Spoonk mat and don't know weather to buy the cotton version or the hemp version. I have been enjoying Spoonk mats for months - I have both the cotton and the hemp. The hemp version is simply the highest quality acupressure mat you can buy. The cotton and hemp mats are identical in size, shape and number of spikes - aesthetically they both look very nice - I prefer the blue in the cotton and the red(really it's sort of orange/red) in the hemp. The difference lies in the cloth covering the mat. Anyone who has had something made of hemp knows it is just a tough fabric. The cotton/hemp blend that Spoonk uses feels really sturdy and thick, yet soft. The cotton mat is softer out of the box, but I fully expect the hemp to break in over time and get softer and softer. Initially I bought the cotton version. It is very nice and head and shoulders in quality above any other mats (with the exception of the Spoonk hemp mat) I have seen or tried. The cotton is thicker than any of the others and probably softer. After using this mat daily for 4 months (much more that I thought I would ever use something like this) I realized that this mat had become something that I will likely use forever. I expect at some point I will need to replace the foam - it is easily removed through the Velcro enclosure. If you are reading this review you have undoubtedly noticed the stellar reviews for acupressure mats. They are amazing. I look for a couple things in a product I will use for many years that touches my skin:
1. Quality (will it hold up)
2. Hygienic (will it get "weird" over time - stink or otherwise)
It is the longevity aspect where I believe the hemp version separates itself from the cotton version. Most people know hemp is super durable, but many don't realize that hemp is naturally antibacterial. That is a major plus in my book even though you can hand wash both mat covers. When I amortize the use of this mat over many years the $30 difference isn't much.
