Excellent 4th-gen eneloop batteries and improved charger (but shop around for the best deal)
This package (Panasonic Eneloop Kit 10 AA 4 AAA batteries & Charger) contains 14 of the latest 4th-gen eneloop batteries, plus a new and improved value charger, BQ-CC17.
The Panasonic BQ-CC17 offers several real improvements over the Sanyo MQN06 4-cell charger, previously bundled with most eneloop packages:
- It can recharge each cell individually, instead of having to charge in pairs like most value chargers.
- It has 4 battery status indicators, one for each cell. (Note that those LEDs are hidden underneath the plastic case. They only turn green during charging)
The BQ-CC17 charges at 300mA average current, so it takes about 7 hours to fully recharge a set of 2000mAh AA batteries. It does not offer a fancy LCD display nor advanced functions such as 'Discharge'. But it does well on what it is designed to do: charging batteries. I have seen several cases where my batteries were over-discharged to 0V and cannot be detected by advanced chargers such as the La Crosse BC1000. The BQ-CC17, on the other hand, always detect and recharge those batteries reliably.
The Panasonic 4th-gen eneloop batteries are mechanically and electically identical to Sanyo 3rd-gen eneloop batteries (or 2nd-gen for that matter). The only difference is that the advertised lifespan is increased from '1800-cycle' to '2100-cycle'. But of course in real life, nobody can tell the difference between those two versions except by their wrappers.
[Bottom Line]
The changer and batteries in this package are both excellent products. It is a great value if you can use all 10 AA and 4 AAA cells. Otherwise you should explore the option of buying the Panasonic BQ-CC17 Battery Charger by itself, and add more eneloop batteries as needed. If you are value conscious (read: cheap) like me, then you should consider the (white-label) AmazonBasics Rechargeable Batteries instead. Those are actually rebranded Sanyo eneloop cells according to my testing, but available at much lower cost.

There is now a Panasonic Eneloop package that contains the new BQ-CC55 charger, plus 8xAA and 4xAAA eneloop batteries. I consider it a great deal due to the better charger.
