I don't know the the tooth paste does anything but make the brushing a little less traumatic for the kitty. Frankly I don't care how much my cat hates getting his teeth brushed. It's made a huge improvement. I wrapped him up in a towel and brushed his back teeth for 20 seconds before letting him go. The first few times it was a bloody mess. His gums were is such bad shape. By the 5th brushing (I wait about 3 days between brushing) his gums were no longer bleeding from brushing. His breath has improved a great deal. Sometimes when I'm sleeping he curls up on my shoulder and thinks I would enjoy a face bath. I assure you that I don't enjoy it and he use to leave a horrible smell. Now he still thinks I should get a bath in the middle of the night but at least I don't feel the need to get up and wash my face in the middle of the night. I tried the other reviews method with letting him lick off the paste and play with him and the brush. I didn't get anywhere with that. I don't think he likes the paste so we don't even use it. Of course he doesn't like his teeth brushed either. Sometimes kitty we have to do things we don't like.
