We've had many shredders in the house and this is comparable to any of those. For people who appreciate protecting your personal information, having a cross-cut shredder is a must. As I can personally attest, it is possible to tape together a receipt or other important document that you accidentally shredded in a standard linear shredder. However this is impossible in a crosscut shredder as the pieces are way too small to do anything with. It also makes disposal of the shredded paper easier as the smaller shredded pieces pack closer together than the longer strips. As with any cross-cut shredders, it is louder than the normal linear shredder. Also you will need to periodically oil the cross-cut knives so that fed paper doesn't bind, the shredder doesn't overheat, and just to ensure proper working order. This is standard with any cross-cut shredder as even the larger office shredders require periodic lubrication. I can also attest that the shredder cuts right through staples as well as credit cards. As far as price goes, the $29.99 Amazon Basics shredder is somewhere in the middle of all the 6-sheet cross-cut shredders that are offered on Amazon. There are some shredders that sell for as little as $20 while there are others that sell for more than $40. To me, all of them seem to have the same functionality although I assume that the lower priced ones shred slower and have cheaper construction. All told, the Amazon Basics 6-sheet Cross-Cut Shredder definitely does what you need it to do. It has no problem chewing through six sheets at a time and can do it quickly. Although it is somewhat loud, this comes with having a cross-cut shredder - they are all loud. Finally the basic construction of the shredder head and the waste basket are more than adequate. Its a nice unit and I would certainly buy it again.
