Brilliant
Among the greatest books I have ever read. So good that everything I have read since sounds amateurish. Nabokov's exploration of a pedophiles's nature is deeply nuanced. Anyone wanting to know whether they should read this book probably isn't looking to my reiew for that answer so I will just say, prepare to be infuriated and charmed. Dazzled and horrified. This isn't a love story, it's a horror novel. And likely a frighteningly good look at the mind of a predator. If you were molested or preyed upon as a young person, beware, this book will likely trigger some stuff you'd rather not re-experience. It is occasionally hilarious, which makes it all the harder to hate the central character. And though that is what you want to do, and what you should do, it's hard not to sympathize with him. Americans love a good true-crime confession and we tend to want to forgive people who appearnto be owning up to their faults. And we tend to forgive a little victim blaming along the way. But what kind of monster do you have to be to root for this guy? Nabokov sets up the scene to play with out emotions and to capture our affection against our better judgement. Not unlike the way HH pursues, captures, and manipulates his prey.
