Great for Starters, Meh for Upgraders
I've had two 2019 Gen2 FireTV Cubes in my house (Living Room & Bedroom) for three years now, love them both. I didn't really feel a "need" to upgrade either, but being kind of a tech-nerd and always wanting the best tech at least in my Living Room, I thought I'd check this out and upgrade the Cube in my Living Room.
In a nutshell, if you're new to FireTV, or have something really old (anything 1st Gen), this is a really great device and I can heartily recommend it.
If you're upgrading a FireTV device of something relatively recent (2nd Gen FireTV Cube or FireStick 4K Max), I'm going to be honest, unless you're looking for a very specific feature this device offers yours doesn't, this is a rather "meh" upgrade and you may not notice the upgrade much, if at all.
Features "upgraded" over 2nd Gen FireTV Cube:
1) WiFi 6E (over old WiFi 5)... to be honest, this is probably the most solid upgrade of all, but I never really had a major problem with it being on WiFi 5 before. (I was getting 450 download speeds on my WiFi 6 Gen-3 Cube and 290 download speeds on my WiFi 5 Gen-2 Cube).
2) Faster Processor... well, this is nice... menus load and move quickly.
3) Dedicated Ethernet Port... that is... sadly 10/100 speed max... no Gigabyte port... this is a bummer, you'd actually get FASTER speeds using the WiFi 6E.
4) Video Upscaling... to be honest... I'm not noticing much of a difference here... I suppose it's better than nothing, but you won't be waking the kids and phoning your mom over this.
5) *HDMI-IN pass through... I suppose if you're short on HDMI connections this is good, but not really all that amazing on its own.
6) **USB-A Port... that is... sadly just USB-2... not 3, not C. Another let-down
The first two upgrades are nice, but not game changers... the last two, well... make you feel like it's 2010 all over again... sad "upgrades" really and scream of "not even trying".
One other "upgrade" I almost forgot to mention... the "new" *remote... it's got a lot more buttons... why? I don't know... they added a bunch of buttons just not needed... cable channel up/down? Is this 2010 again? If you've cut the cord, you probably don't need these buttons, just wasted clutter... shortcuts to apps you either don't use or can access with a simple "Alexa, switch to Hulu"... why do we need all these extra buttons?
The new remote might have been useful to me years ago when I actually had a cable box, but in 2022, they are just completely pointless and add unnecessary clutter. I was curious if my (old) 2018 2nd Gen Alexa Voice Remote (seen in my attached picture) from my old FireTV Cube would work with the new one... guess what, it does! Hooray, I left the "new" remote in the box, never going to use it, I'll keep using my older, simpler, got ONLY the buttons I need on the remote... I got the direction wheel, up/down volume and mute... don't really need anything else.
Once again, if you're new to FireTV or have something rather old, this is worth the money... but if you have a recent FireTV device, probably best to use your money elsewhere unless you simply must have the latest tech... as for me, I'm going to stand-pat... it was nice for the living room, but it's not worth upgrading my 2nd Gen FireTV Cube in the bedroom to this.
EDIT:
A couple of things I should have mentioned or clarified
* On the HDMI pass-through (and new many added-buttons remote), this does have a niche-case... if you're still using a Cable Box in 2022, you can run the Cable Box through the HDMI port on the Cube and combined with the "cable channels up/down" buttons, run your cable box directly from the Cube (as well as voice commands, like "Alexa, switch to ESPN on Cable"). Like I did mention earlier, I wish I had this years ago, but I've long-since cut the cable, so this is "too little, too late" for me... but if you still use a Cable Box, this Cube is for you!
** That USB-2 port... in relation to the sad built-in Ethernet port. While the Ethernet Port limits you to 10/100 speeds, you can buy a USB-A Ethernet dongle, plug it into the Cube's USB-A port and actually get much faster Ethernet Speeds... sadly USB-2 does limit Ethernet speeds to 400mbps, but you'll probably get around 300 or so with the dongle which is 3-times faster than the built-in Ethernet port... so that USB-2 port does have a use.
