We originally bought this for our cats to drink out of so that we don't have to keep running the sink, most animals prefer moving water. I wasn't necessarily concerned with the 'loud pump' complaints that I was reading, but I was nervous about the splash that people were pointing out.. I set ours up (the pump actually has a high/med/low switch on it) I put ours on the medium setting and assembled the pieces, so easy! It did splash a bit until I put some rocks in it but now it's completely silent and doesn't splash at all! Such a perfect little fountain, adds such a nice touch and the cats love it!
