IMPORTANT: the thermostat ISN'T numbered backwards.
I am posting this review primarily to counter an erroneous claim made by another reviewer which can lead to confusion and dissatisfaction with the heater. In fact, *I* read his claim prior to receiving my heater and then proceeded to operate the heater in accordance with it... until I found out that, although his erroneous conclusions were understandable, 1) they were simply wrong, and 2) real quirks of the heater would reinforce that erroneous conclusion, and you might not ever realize that you had been operating under false assumptions despite frustration with the heater's operation... until you did real testing, esp. with a measuring device.
See, his claim is that the thermostat is counter-intuitively numbered backwards (i.e. lower numbers = higher temperature settings, higher numbers = lower temperature settings). This claim is reinforced by the quirky, misleading behavior of the LED indicator when operating the heater at the "MIN" power level. Regardless of your "MIN" setting on the power adjustment knob, the LED indicator will jump away to "MED" (suggesting increasing heater operation) as you turn down the thermostat into lower numbers, and returns to "MIN" at as you turn up the thermostat into higher numbers (suggesting decreasing heater operation). This is the primary observation that leads to the idea that the thermostat might be numbered backwards.
Which in turn led to the frustrating experience of finding the heater too hot, unable to output and maintain a lower temperature even at the lowest thermostat setting... which you think is at the highest numbers.
This is all wrong.
What I have found is with instrumented testing (with a Kill-A-Watt P2) is that the thermostat numbers are indeed intuitive (i.e. lower numbers = lower temperature settings, higher numbers = higher temperature settings). What is happening is that at the "MIN" power level (and only at the "MIN" power level), the LED behavior is anomalous and corresponds *in opposition* to what the heater is doing (i.e. when it goes from "MIN" to "MED", it is actually indicating that the heater is no longer heating; when it goes from "MED" to "MIN", it is actually indicating the heater is heating).
To put it simply:
At all power settings...
If you find the maintained temperature too hot... turn to a lower number.
If you find the maintained temperature too cold... turn to a higher number.
Simply ignore what the LED indicator does at the "MIN" power setting.
