Why I picked this over the SRAM PG850 11-32T
I weighed the 11-32T version of this cassette at 302g. Even though this is about 25g (0.88 oz) more than the SRAM PG850 8 Speed Cassette (as measured by customer Gamblore 151), I feel this very slight weight penalty is a good compromise for better spacing between gears. The HG51aw (11-32T) is the following: 11-13-15-18-21-24-28-32 While the cogs of a comparable PG850 are: 11-12-14-16-18-21-26-32 With a cassette like this, I'm more interested in the low ratio (large sprocket) end of the spectrum. The Shimano has 4 tooth jumps between the largest three gears, while the SRAM has 5 and 6 tooth jumps. As a side note, Shimano uses the following letter codes for its 8 speed cassettes: -an 11-13-15-17-20-23-26-30 -ao 11-13-15-17-20-23-26-34 -aw 11-13-15-18-21-24-28-32 -bf 11-13-15-17-19-21-24-28
