Rail Fans, Get Your Train Wreck Fix! Woot! Woot! ... 5 Stars, -1 for Billing Permission
In this game, you start in the late 1800's during the rise of the industrial revolution. Competing railroads have made a mess of the landscape, and you are tasked with bringing order to the chaos. You need to switch and control the trains to ensure each arrives at its destination safely. Railfans will love this game!
The game requires lightning reflexes while playing, but patience and cautious study before starting the level. You have to get the colored trains to their corresponding colored destination. Timing becomes critical quickly - no pun intended. The wise player will start to figure out the puzzle *before* pressing "Ready".
The game features 4 "eras" currently, each with 24 levels, for a total of 96 levels. Each era has its first level unlocked. If 96 levels weren't enough, the developer is promising that 3 more ERAs are coming soon.
The game utilizes a "Star" system - 3 stars for perfect solution. Activating too many pads to complete the level docks stars. The stars unlock locked levels.
Think of this as a 3D "version" of Railyard; it is not exactly the same, but similar enough. This one has a nice storyline, amazing graphics, deep stereo sound and very good music. Obviously, a lot of thought and dedication went into this app.
GOOD:
+ Good tutorials in the first "Industrial Era". Instructions are not necessary as there's enough hand-holding to please almost everyone, yet enough latitude for the player to err and experiment. By the time you have finished the 5th level, you'll be comfortable enough with the basic mechanics and are ready to play on your own.
+ Just the right amount of additional challenge added each level. You will be challenged, not bored, and most people won't be too frustrated (kids might, however).
+ *WOW* the graphics, sounds, music, and more! Attention to every little detail!
BAD:
- Access to Amazon Billing Credit Card
- Landscape only; cannot play "upside down" (not that big a deal)
- You CANNOT earn "skip levels". You start each era with 3 "skip levels", and there seems to be no way to earn or recoup them. I burned my three early on in testing for this review, and the later levels can be a bear. I'd like to see that aspect changed in future releases.
- Very Large download and install. This is only an issue for people using costly cell data or who have space limitations on their devices.
If you have a "trainiac" in your household, he or she will *love* this game, I promise you. My son was *obsessed* with trains from two years old to six, and he would have been in utter bliss as long as the battery lasted on the device, so I'm fully versed in all things train. 100% endorsed!
My only concern, and it is a biggie, is why this app needs access to my Amazon billing credit card? The only thing I can figure is that the developer is planning on adding In-App Purchasing (IAP) in the future, so you should keep an eye out for that. Because of the access to the Amazon billing credit card, I have to dock a star; too bad, too, because otherwise this is solidly a 5-star 99-cent game.
