THESE ARE THE ONES YOU WANT
I have quite a few glass storage jars whose mouths are slightly larger than the newer crop, and have had difficulty finding replacement gaskets, a task made more difficult by inconsistent labeling information by vendors at Amazon. After extensive research, I bought these gaskets thinking they would fit my jars whose original (aged) gaskets have the following dimensions: gasket outside diameter - 4" (100 mm) gasket inside diameter - 2-7/8" (73 mm) jar width to center of opening - 3-1/2" (85mm) When I received them, I discovered the dimensions for these gaskets are: outside diameter - 3 1/2" (90 mm) inside diameter - 2 7/16" (62 mm) I almost sent them back. The only reason I didn't was that I was unable to find the "right" size anywhere. I tried one on a jar, and was pleasantly surprised. These Bormioli seals are made from high quality slightly elastic rubber that easily stretched to the larger opening. They are dense, but not as hard and inflexible as the orange seals or lower quality white seals. They are also the proper thickness, unlike some of the other thinner seals sold here. It took a bit of maneuvering to get them on (three hands would help), but its not stressing the product, and once installed they are held securely on the jar but still allow for some adjustment. Do NOT buy the 4 1/4" seals (outside dimension)thinking it's your next best option. They will fall off every time you open the jar and drive you crazy. You want a bit of stretch to hold the seals onto the lid, and I suspect the quality of this product means they will survive the elements a bit longer than the original set. I tested for water tightness and the clean white color is a big plus for me. I hope this helps others avoid the same frustrations I went through. BTW, the important dimension that everyone seems to forget is the glass ring in the lid, which is what the gasket will fit to. That dimension is 3" on my jars. You want the inside dimension of the gasket to be smaller than that size so the rubber stretches enough to hold the gaskets in place. Unfortunately, manufacturers don't include that dimension anywhere in their product information. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• May, 2017 - 5 years later, none of these gaskets have deteriorated or hardened. They are all still just like new, with no stains or cracking. They are much better quality that the old red gaskets they replaced.
