News from the Pediatricians Office
It is a good product. I have been a pediatric nurse for 5 years now, and have a 3 month old. I have been taking Fenugreek AND blessed thistle, as well as making "lactation cookies" that I am eating on a regular basis and eating 'lactogenic foods'. For whatever reason, my daughter 'bulks up' before bed every night. I am producing enough to keep up with her, but she needs more in the evening, which also helps her to sleep longer stretches overnight. Yes, I am sure I would be able to keep her on the breast every 45 minutes in the evenings to boost my supply, but I also would not be able to make dinner for my family. So my husband is able to feed her a bottle and spend time with her while I get dinner ready for him! We had previously tried Gerber Gentle, Similac Sensitive, Similac Advance and Enfamil Newborn. Every single one caused my daughter to spit-up excessively, which we took as an upset stomach. Being a pediatric nurse in an office setting, I have access to every formula out there and when the Similac for Supplementation showed up in our supply cabinet, I grabbed a can to try. We have had NO problems since. The formula rep explained it this way: breast milk is much gentler on a baby's stomach than formula. If a baby is exclusively formula fed, they wouldn't necessarily have a problem, as they are used to taking it on a routine basis. However, those babies that might need to be supplemented with a few ounces of formula each day, need something equally as gentle as the breast milk mom produces. This particular formula was designed for that reason. It is 'lighter' so to say. It also has probiotics in it, that are naturally found in breast milk. It is not any more expensive than any other basic Similac formula. I say give it a try, but keep in mind, too, that every baby is different. And what works for one baby may or may not work for another. Hope this helps! And ignore anyone who tries to tell you that 'you need to do this or that!' Supplementing your baby is fine. It is true that breast is best. But it is also true that you need to do what is best for your baby AND YOU! If that means supplementing with a bottle or two a day so you can get a break for your own sanity, DO IT! Good Luck!
