Hate memory foam but need pressure point relief and don't want to replace your mattress?
So far this has been miraculously helpful. Slept like a baby despite my horrible back issues. We'll see how it holds up over time. I've suffered from back pain for the past 30 yrs. Recently, it became so bad (after losing my 13 yr. old dog, I guess I buried my pain physically), that I found myself in such pain that I was unable to sleep in any position. My upper back pain radiated into my shoulders and rotator cuffs to the point that the only position I could sleep on was my back, and even then, I was waking with my back cramped. I have a very expensive Sealy latex mattress that had served me well for a long time, but this latest incident made sleep impossible. Suddenly my mattress felt way too firm. I was waking with my arms cold and numb. After a lot of research online, I decided to purchase this dual layer topper. I immediately found the top fiber filled cushion to be too warm and overall not helpful, so I removed it. It put too much restriction on the gel being able to compress under me. Mind you, I despise the feeling of memory foam and how it engulfs you. This gel relieve pressure points, but quickly returns to it's original shape as you move, unlike memory foam. With the gel layer alone, this is extremely relieving to my shoulders, hips, knees, etc and I've been sleeping well on it. I just hope it won't wear out too quickly. Time will tell and I will definitely update positively or negatively.
Incidentally, after using this for a couple of weeks, I thought perhaps I needed to just buy a new latex mattress, customized to my personal size and sleeping habits. I received the new latex mattress last night and, even with the customization, it is way too firm. I've placed this gel top back on top of my original latex mattress and hope to go back to sleeping like a baby again. I would have given it 5 stars, but feel like the additional cost with the fiber filled topper was not useful. Yes, you still need a mattress protector to hold the gel layer on, but you don't need the cheap topper supplied with this combo.
