Watch them all. The payoff will be so worth it.
As a fan of the books, I can tell you that mind-blowing content is coming. The source material is comprised of 14 books which sold over 90 million copies, and they were finished. The first book, Eye of the World, was published 6 years before Game of Thrones, in 1990, so we have been waiting a very long time for this.
A great deal of content is packed into that first exciting episode. For people unfamiliar with any of it, it may seem overwhelming. Others may not be too sure about all the main characters since the show begins with 7 of them. Just keep watching. That exposition comes as events unfold.
What's coming can't be spoiled. You just have to experience it. Season 2, already in production as I write this, reportedly dives deeply into each of our main characters. It also veers off the "expected" fantasy path into really intriguing territory. Enjoy the ride.
