Best Zero Carb/Zero Cal Natural Sweetener I've Tried
I've been searching for a sugar replacement for quite a while. I've tried just about everything, but still wasn't "happy" with how my coffee tasted when using them. I tried erythritol, sugar alcohols, stevia, and sucralose, but to me, they all had a weird after taste. I did use agave nectar for a while, definitely a first place winner as far as taste, but while its glycemic index was lower (how quickly sugar enters the blood), the overall sugar and carb count is still high. So while it was a little helpful in the short term to keeping my glucose readings from spiking, in the long term, it was still detrimental to the overall goal of drastically cutting carbs and sugar from my diet. If - like me - you're diabetic, or if you've ever done keto or low carb dieting, you understand the dilemma. I kept hearing about monk fruit extract, but most of the brands on the market are not pure - they're mixed with erythritol and other ingredients.
Finally I found this brand by Smart138 Foods on Amazon. Simply called Monk Drops, it is pure monk fruit extract with nothing else added to it: no alcohol, not even water. It has no preservatives, so refrigeration is recommended after opening to preserve freshness. At $10, for 1.5 oz, it's a bit expensive, but I'm going for it. My health is at stake after all!
A little goes a long way. To sweeten 6 oz of coffee, 3-4 drops is recommended. Of course, if you like your coffee sweeter, or if you pour a larger cup like I do, you'll need to use more. I use about 16 drops in a 16 oz mug of coffee.
The BPA-Free plastic bottle and dropper tip has a very small opening so you have precise control over how much comes out. It drips 1 drop at a time, not a squirt like some other liquid sweeteners do. Even when you squeeze it hard, it still comes out a drop at a time, just faster. To open, the cap must be pushed down and turned, similar to a child safety cap, but it's quite easy.
It has very little after taste. After trying as many zero calorie/ zero carb sweeteners as I have, I find this one has the least amount of aftertaste. My coffee tastes more like it used to... not exactly the same as with sugar, but definitely better than with stevia, erythritol, sucralose, or any of the others I tried. It's great in tea and lemonade as well.
It can be used in baking, but you need to adjust/ use less: this product is a lot sweeter than sugar. In my opinion, one drop adds the sweetness of about 1/8 teaspoon of sugar.
Servings per bottle: Each bottle has about 350 servings and a serving is 3-4 drops. Assuming you use 10 drops in a mug of coffee or tea, thats 35 mugs, give or take as to your personal preference and usage.
Monk Fruit grows only in China, but this company, Smart138, imports it and bottles it here in the USA.
It is Non-GMO, Paleo, Keto, Vegan, and Gluten Free.
I recommend trying it at least once, especially if you are looking for 100% natural alternatives to refined sugar that are zero calorie and zero carb. It works for me! Will buy again!
