Awesome device! Use CAST IRON!!!
Really love this sandwich maker but the teflon coated pans absolutely suck!!! The teflon on both of my pans started to bubble and peel after only a few uses. UNACCEPTABLE, not to mention potentially hazardous to your health (depending on what study you read). Luckily I found an absolutely awesome solution! Lodge makes a 3.5" Miniature Cast Iron Skillet (LMS3) which can easily replace the flimsy, teflon-coated pans. Two fit nicely in mine. What's even better is that after I wipe down my pans and put a light coat of oil on them, I just toast them and store them! (See pictures) Just use caution with how you handle the cast iron pans. You can safely use a folded paper towel to grab the handles after cooking eggs. But after putting them in the toaster, they will unsafe to touch for a while without something like a silicone pot holder. Those who use cast iron regularly know how hot it can get, but if you've never used cast iron before BE CAREFUL!
So besides the horrible teflon pans, this thing is great! It makes awesome toast, egg sandwiches, perfect hard boiled eggs, and you can use little cast iron skillets!
A few tips:
1. Spraying down the cast iron pans with oil when cooking eggs is a MUST!
2. If you heat ham on the tray above the eggs, be prepared to drain off the water that falls into the egg pans. The eggs will be a little watery, but I'm ok with that.
3. To clean the water boiling tray, simply put a tsp. of white vinegar and a tbsp. of water in the tray and run an egg cycle. Stop the cycle just before the water boils completely off, and wipe dry.
