Finally cut the cord
I'd been thinking of getting rid of my $155 cable bill for some time now. The Roamio looked like a great solution to making the cut and going OTA while retaining DVR, 4 tuners and channel guide services. So, we made the jump and we cut the cable cord (well, at least for the cable TV services, we still have the broadband). So far, no regrets. We have a good selection of OTA channels locally including all the broadcast networks and several sub-channels. There is even something called ION TV which I'd never heard of until we went OTA, its not on our cable. At one time, the station broadcast UPN, but they ended up being ION and has 5 sub-channels. We fill in any gaps in what we want to watch with Netflix and Amazon. Its great being able to do almost everything from one box with one remote, though we still have to use the TV remote to use the TV's Amazon app for Amazon Prime since its MIA on the Tivo. Would love to see Amazon Prime on the Tivo, but not a showstopper. We also bought a Mini to give us an extension to the TV in the master bedroom. Works great since the latest update and Netflix is running on it now. So with the cost for the Tivo service and Netflix, we have dropped our monthly bill from $155 to about $30 (I don't include Amazon Prime in the cost because I got it originally for the 2-day free shipping anyways, and the free streaming is a bonus to me). We will use the public library (free) and Redbox (cheap) for most of our newer movie needs, and throw in some Amazon streaming rentals for watching when we haven't picked anything up and don't feel like driving down the road to the Redbox. The Amazon rental probably comes out cheaper anyways if I have to make an extra trip and crank up my Hemi. Since we had these extra 'discretionary' expenses before we dropped the cable, they don't really count either. So I'll give myself a $125 savings on this one. Now that I think about it, I was already paying for Netflix as well, I guess I could subtract it from my current costs as well and take my savings over $130! :) Update: The more I use the Tivo, the more I appreciate its software. The DVR software runs circles around what we had on the cable boxes. I also love being able to look for movies and TV shows on Netflix, Hulu Plus and Amazon without leaving Tivo Central.
