Simple, Effective, & Useful: The Basic Tutorial
Between harvesting our home garden to freezing our own game meat and fish, my family has been familiar with some of the brand name vacuum sealers for years. It was quite tempting at this price point to add a new machine to our line-up, but we had no previous knowledge of the Megawise brand name. Well, so far we are impressed.
The box included all we needed to get started: the Model VS6621 sealing unit, power cord, a selection of ready-to-use vacuum bags, an extra gasket for the sealing unit, and a vacuum tube (for use with special sealing jars and bags, not included). I even liked the slogan on the box: SPOIL YOUR HOME WITH MEGAWISE! There was also a well-written instruction manual, and a warranty card.
The real test was how the unit performed. If you are not yet familiar with vacuum sealers, they are hands-down one of the most effective tools your kitchen could have when it comes to revolutionizing your perishable food storage. Removing all of the air from a package before freezing keeps freezer burn at bay, and increases the freezer shelf life by many months if not years. It really does "lock in freshness". Beyond freezer use, you can also use the vacuum process to marinate meats, with the vacuum pressure helping to work flavors and liquid seasonings into the meat, not just on it. You can also seal garden produce, dry goods such as cookies, crackers, and other snacks, or basically anything you'd like to protect with waterproof packaging!
And if you want to check out the phrase "wet aging meat", it may forever change how you approach a steak!
The unit's simplicity is a great part of its charm. 4 simple buttons: Food (dry or moist), Seal (for sealing a bag without vacuuming), Vac Seal, and Stop. Even if you have never used one before, you'll be efficient with this one in mere minutes. Be sure to watch my attached video for the 60-second tutorial!
The only difficulty you might encounter if is you try to vacuum a bag which is overfull, or that you have not left enough empty bag at the open, sealing end. It is important for that end to be able to lie flat without wrinkle or overlap. If not, the bag will not be able to pull a good vacuum seal, so don't be stingy over an extra inch or two of bag. The VS6621 should work with any commercial sealing back (not designed for your zipper lock storage bags) and will easily accommodate any bag 11" wide or less.
This kitchen tool will take up very little space, is easy to clean and store, and even your kids will be excited to help operate it (it really is pretty cool watching it suck all of the air out of a bag!) :D Do yourself a favor, and spoil your home with Megawise, pronto!
