I just moved a 1100 lb roll top desk! Tips here, too.
I just moved an at least 1100 lb, 5.25 foot wide, roll top desk with built-in bookcase hutch on top! It came in 5 pieces (when we bought it and two burly men moved it into our home and assembled it) and it's solid cherry, Amish made. I could barely, and I mean with every muscle fiber in my legs and back, lift each individual corner by 1 cm to even get these generously sized slides underneath (my wife was on hands and knees to slip it under, just barely). We then, and our combined weight is only 300 lbs, pushed it across a wooden office floor, a tiled foyer, and into the carpeted den--a grand total of 40-45 feet--and even turned it and positioned it properly against the wall. No problemmo! Wow! Some reviews on here mention "booties" that come on other brands for use on tile or wood, and some say putting a sock on these to help them slide. We did none of the above (they don;t come with booties and we added no socks) and we slide it without any issues across the three types of flooring mentioned. Didn't hurt the floor, the desk, or our backs at all. These are much more "slippery" than you'd think (I could stand on them and glide on our tile floor), and they're well made. The sponge top, closed cell prevents the furniture from slipping off them, and the size on these is super generous. I'm writing this on the evening after we just moved it, and the sense of accomplishment is huge. It really is a giant desk. I would certainly buy this brand again, Waxman, after using them even this one time. I suggest getting this pack of 9x5 inch+ sizes instead of a smaller size for two reasons: because most things you'd move that were large (refrigerator, computer hutch, roll top desk, etc.) have a larger footprint, and need a larger slider. Plus, you can use a large slider on a smaller item, even one with four thin legs, but you cannot use a small slider on a large legged item. Also, with a larger size slider like this set of four (the ad does not seems to say it well, there are four 9x5+ inch sliders in here), it can take more weight, so you'd be more likely to be able to leave books in place on a bookshelf, or drawers in the desk, for instance, than you could if you got the smaller ones. Frankly, it was so hard to lift my desk even at the corners that I'm leaving these bad boys under my desk. I may have to move it again! But, I am buying a new set ready to roll--or, should I say, "slide"--for whenever my next rearrangement occurs. Hugely recommended. Thanks!
