We've learned a couple things about this product since purchasing. First, it only operates within 1-3" of the surface of the water. That means for long-term operation it either needs to be used in a very large body of water and positioned on a raised pedistal, or it needs to float, so that as the water gets vaporized and decreases the mister stays at an appropriate distance to the surface. I've been using these misters as an ultrasonic humidifier in our apartment; the mister sits in a 5-gallon bucket of water in which the water level changes daily. I made a float originally from a Solo cup and some foam, and there is a float sold by AGPtEK Mist Maker which does the job with a little modification (it's TOO boyant, so you need to remove most of the foam). The one other detail you need to know before buying this mister is that the lifespan of the small misting disc in the center of the unit is DRAMATICALLY decreased by running it for more than 10 hours a day; I found this out the hard way, as we ran our first unit 24-7, and it lasted only about 3 months. Buy a digital outlet timer, set it for only 10 hours a day, and you'll get a much longer lifespan. Lastly, the black plastic unit (not the steel one) seems to be more resilient in general, so that's the unit we have currently.
