Compared to Calily and ZAQ Diffusers; with pictures
I love my essential oils and have been a fan of diffusers since I bought my first one, the ZAQ Allay Litemist Diffuser. If you’ll bear with me on my long review you can see my comparison between the four I currently own including this item that the review is for.
First let me say, that many people may only need one diffuser. Personally, I prefer having several because we have a two story house and this way I can keep one upstairs and one downstairs at all times and not have to move mine from floor to floor. Secondly, we have three children so when illness hits the diffusers move into their rooms to cover them in essential oils as they sleep, having more than one means at least one diffuser per room and illness out sooner rather than later.
Now onto the diffusers. I will post my thoughts on each one individually and then sum it up at the bottom with my personal preferences. I posted some pictures below so you see them next to each other as well to compare looks, styles, and sizes. I filled all the diffusers to the max amount accepted and timed them. The run times are in the descriptions.
1.ZAQ ZAQ Allay Essential Oil Diffuser LiteMist Ultrasonic Aromatherapy With Ionizer - 80 ML Capacity, Blue. I have had this diffuser for about 2 years and it’s always worked great for me so that’s a plus for dependability. This diffuser is very simple and straightforward. One button to turn the mist on, hit it again to turn off the light, and then a third time to turn the diffuser off completely. I love the simplicity, no confusion or too many options. I do use a piece of black electrical tape to cover the button because even when I turn the light off the light around the button stays lit. So I cover it with tape so that when I am sleeping it doesn’t light up my room (it is very bright). The plug is big and bulky and could cover two outlets which limits where I can plug it into. The diffuser consists of two parts inside which just means more to clean in my opinion. Another thought is it’s only one color. This really doesn’t bother me and I love the blue but it is something to note for other consumers. Total nonstop run time was 5 hours and 13 minutes for one filling.
2. Calily™ Eternity Diffuser Calily™ Eternity Ultrasonic Essential Oil Diffuser Aromatherapy with Relaxing & Soothing Multi-Color LED Light - Perfect for Home, Office, Spa, Etc.. This is, by far, the most beautiful diffuser I own or have seen. It’s so pretty I could just sit and watch it as it changes colors. The design is sleek and smooth and so relaxing and calming even without oils in it. Other than that it is pretty much the same as the ZAQ diffuser. One button that does it all. The colors change but you can stop it on a color by pushing the button again. If you want to change the color you have to turn the diffuser off and then on again and let the colors cycle through until you get the color you want. No timer or options here just on with light, on without light, or off- simple. I will disclose that the first time I used this diffuser I had just a couple drops of water standing at the base. No big deal but then I used it again the next day and I had a lot of water that had leaked from the middle seam of the unit down the sides. I would estimate about a full ounce. I used it again and no leak, then again and got a couple drops. So strange and seems kind of hit or miss. I sent an email to the company and they responded right away and told me that they would send another out to me. If nothing else, they have excellent customer service. I have posted additional photos to show the leakage problem on this products review. You can see those shots if you go to the link for this product. This diffuser also has a bulky plug and it holds the least amount of water and therefore runs out the fastest of the four. This is fine if you know you only need it for a couple of hours and it is the smallest of the four, which is great when you need something compact with a small footprint. I really wish there was a battery option for this diffuser because I think this one would be perfect to travel with. Also, this is a single piece lid which means less to clean and less parts to handle. This ran for 3 hours and 5 minutes and then turned off but there was still water in the base so I turned it back on and ran longer. I don’t know why it turns off after 3 hours if it hasn’t run out of water. It ran for another hour and 23 minutes after that before turning off again. Total run time for one filling was 4 hours and 28 minutes.
3. doTERRA Petal. This was my first diffuser with options and I’ve had it about a year now. I keep this one by my bedside and use it most often. It has options for 1, 2, or 4 hour intervals and a separate button for each the mist and the light. Only one color option which is fine since I usually have the light off to sleep. This diffuser has the biggest capacity between all four of these and spreads the farthest. The plug is sideways so it doesn’t block any other outlets and is easy to fit into my power strip. It is probably the least attractive of the four and has the biggest footprint which makes it a little challenging finding the space on my nightstand but it works great. Also, a one piece lid which adds to simplicity and is a plus for me. I had turned this diffuser on to 4 hours since there was no constant run option but I had it timed and was watching it so as soon as it turned off I turned it right back on again to measure the complete time of one filling. Total run time was 6 hours and 54 minutes.
4. Calily Tower Calily™ Tower Ultrasonic Essential Oil Diffuser Aromatherapy with Soothing & Relaxing Multi-Color LED Light - Perfect for Home, Office, Spa, Etc.. I only just received this one so I haven’t had too much experience with it just yet. It has a lot options with it like the doTERRA diffuser. It is pretty with its changing color lights which you can lock on and off without having to turn the whole diffuser off like you do with the Eternity diffuser. There are options for constant mist or intermittent mist or completely off. There is no timer setting but I find that to be a completely preferential option and can’t say that that is either good or bad. It all depends on your needs. I love that the plug for this diffuser is actually a USB port so I can plug it into my USB hub and not take up any outlets on my power strip. It comes with the wall adapter too (which is a sideways plug so it doesn’t block other outlets) but you have the option of using that or using any USB port to run it. This diffuser seems to pour out the most mist and the funnel helps the mist be set out high though that doesn’t actually make the mist reach the highest levels between these four, as far as I could tell this one and the ZAQ diffuser both hit the same heights with \ the Petal diffuser going just an inch or two higher than these and the Eternity falling the shortest. Since this one pours out the most mist at once it requires more oil drops to make the scent noticeable. That is a fault in my opinion as oils are expensive and I don’t want to use more than is necessary but if a bad illness hits this diffuser would get the most oils out into the air the quickest. This product also came with a small cup for measuring and filling the diffuser base, it is a nice little addition but not something I will ever use. I always either fill directly from the sink or use my drinking water bottle that I always have nearby. I had a hard time with this one the first time I used it. I couldn’t get the lid to sit on it flush. I tried with great force for about five minutes then had my husband try. I read the directions over and over but it just said to put the lid on securely which I couldn’t figure out how to do. This has a two piece top so I had adjusted the inside piece a couple times but that didn’t work either. Eventually I found that there are two very small, almost invisible, lines on the inside lid piece and the base that need to be lined up. Once that is done the top lid piece slides on and locks easily. Now that I know that this is super easy to use but it took me a while to figure that out. Hopefully, this little insight can help someone else too as the directions don’t say this at all. The run time of this one is a little odd. It ran constantly for 3 hours and then seemed to turn itself off for five minutes at a time and then turn on again to run for about 5 minutes at a time. I assume this is the same as the intermittent mode but I didn’t choose that mode, I chose the constant run so I don’t know why it decided to change itself. It eventually turned off and though there was more water left in the base it would not turn back on until I added more. Total run time (including all the 5 minute intervals it was not emitting mist) was 4 hours and 45 minutes.
You can see that each diffuser is unique and has their own beneficial qualities and things that make them better than the others as well as a fault or two that lowers their desirability a bit. My personal favorite is the doTERRA, mainly because of the capacity of it and the fact that it has different buttons for it’s different features. My second choice would probably be the Calily Tower for the same reasons as well as the price is great on this item! If you are looking for something just for looks and not so much the ability of the diffuser than definitely go with the Calily Eternity! It is so beautiful and the pictures and even video really don’t do it justice. The ZAQ is reliable and simple and I have no complaints about it but if I were to buy a second of any of these products it would probably be the Calily Tower because it has all the options and it is the best value for the price being asked.
