ORIGINAL (2014): Bought a 2-pack and have caught over 100 wasps per week once I got the recipe correct. Tried apple juice, grape juice, meat, etc. The number one mix that started attracting loads of wasps to the trap was cranberry juice supersaturated with 1 heaping tablespoon of sugar. Last week we caught 130 wasps total between the 2 traps. Just microwave the cranberry juice and dissolve the sugar. Every week I dump out a literal dried puck of dead wasps. It's disgusting, but effective! There are always a few moths, flies and gnats to add that "protein" smell, so you don't need the meat part of the recipe. UPDATE (2015): After using the traps all summer and well into the fall, I stored them over the winter in the garage and was able to put them out in April. Last summer, I didn't put the traps out until the Yellow Jacket nest was already established. That's why I was catching up to 200 Yellow Jackets a week in these traps. (I verified the insects were actually Yellow Jackets, not bees: hairless body, wasp shape, etc.) I read that Yellow Jacket nests can produce up to 5,000 offspring, and the best way to get rid of the nest is to catch the queen ("foundress") in early spring before the nest is established (or re-established). This year, I think we did it right. I put the traps out in April, and have caught some GIANT specimens. We haven't seen the onslaught of Yellow Jackets on our back porch like we did the past 3 years. I think we caught the new queen before the colony got re-established. Each week, I still empty and re-fill the traps, but usually there are only 1 or 2 Yellow Jackets in there (vs ~130 like last summer), and 5-10 flies, and 1 or 2 small moths. I'm so happy that my 18-month old will be able to enjoy our backyard without us worrying about the swarm of Yellow Jackets we have seen every summer in the past.
