**Updated 2016.08.05** Conceptually, great! Execution, not great. Physics still apply.
I had high hopes for this solution, as it is brining a mesh network to a home/small office audience. In a business environment, mesh networks are not new. There are several access points located throughout a building, and a controller to make them all work together. eero follows that same concept, with one notable exception. For the most part, the "office solutions" are connected using a wired network back to the main controller. eero's approach is to use a hidden wireless network to connect the access points together, and then re-transmit the data on another network to which the computers/devices connect. This is an important distinction--wired versus wireless. It means that the same limitations affecting signal strength from a non-eero implementation will carry over to an eero implementation between the eeros themselves.
So, that leads me to this review...and more importantly, the low rating. These devices lack reliability, probably due to the wireless communication link between them. I have one device that will just turn red (go offline) for no reason. I'd like to say what eero thinks the problem is, but a ticket submitted two days ago has gone unanswered. Vintage start-up operational problems. I get it---they didn't, or couldn't, plan well to prepare for the deluge of calls they'd be getting, and probably have an understaffed phone center.
The second problem I've noted with these devices is that they silently lose connectivity to end devices. So, for example, I have several automation devices (WeMo devices, video cameras, garage door controller) that are all wireless. These devices lose connectivity throughout the day. So, the cameras no longer report activity realtime, same with the garage door controller. The WeMo devices fail to respond when contacted. This, simply, isn't acceptable.
Yes, when things are connected and working, they work relatively well. But, when they aren't, it's maddening. There aren't really any tools to help troubleshoot the issue(s), either. And, again, a nonexistent support experience.
2016.08.05 Update: Over the months, I've worked with eero's support team to resolve most of the issues addressed in my earlier review. At this time, I have had no lingering problems with the eero devices. Before posting this, I set a minimum of one month of a stabilized environment before posting this review.
As noted earlier, eero has stated that the cable modem supplied by my provider is incompatible with their solution. As I've noted before, I had no problem with several other wireless routers working with the same modem. This said, I feel this is a eero problem, not a cable modem problem. What eero did, which was completely at their own initiative, was to send me a replacement modem that they've determined works with their device. After installing that device, I did not have any of the issues noted. However, I've had problems with this type of device in the past. And, indeed, those problems returned. As this is not a review of that device, I will summarize by saying it loses sync with the cable system, reboots, and then gains signal again. This is only after several days of use, which leads me to believe it is a memory leak with the firmware in that modem. That said, i replaced that device with a Cisco unit. Everything has been perfect since then.
I have had no red light issues on the eero devices for a couple of months. The other oddities I noted above (various network issues, random connectivity with devices, etc.) are now completely absent. The eero solution is very solid within my home environment. I do notice a slight speed degradation, but not significant. Although probably unnecessary, I added a fourth eero to my environment.
My only negative with this solution is that devices (computers, cell phones, etc.) like to "hold on" the last access point accessed. So, if my iPad connects to an access point in the living room, it will hold on to that even when I go to a completely different room in my home--despite the fact that there is another access point in that room. This does sometimes result in issues related to speed and network timeouts. (poor signal, essentially) I do not know if this is an eero issue, or a problem with the devices themselves.
For individuals who have homes where WiFi coverage is an issue, I am comfortable recommending the eero solution to overcome dead spots or overall signal problems.
