Excellent lantern! Very Bright, good battery, easy to use!
My Boy Scout troop recently decided it would be best if we stop using propane lanterns and switch to LED/electric lanterns instead.
Reasons for switching to LED/electric lanterns:
- Safety: No more concerns about burns, fires, etc.
- Simple: No more fiddling around with mantels & no more cross threading fittings
- Less waste: No more disposing of green propane bottles
I bought three different LED/electric lanterns and my troop used them through our week-long summer camp. It was unanimous that the ToughLight was the best lantern. We then purchased 3 additional ToughLight lanterns for the troop.
Key features of ToughLight lantern:
- Well built: I cannot stress this enough. We feel this lantern will survive the ‘more extreme use’ that the Boy Scouts tend to put equipment through.
- Simple operation: Press button for high, medium, low, flash, off. When lantern is on for a short time – press button once to turn off
- It sounds silly but other electric lanterns are not as easy to use/figure out and one ends up getting blinded while
they do figure out the operation
- Size/weight: Lantern is relatively small size which is nice. It is not very heavy
- Don’t think one would backpack with it but it’s lighter than many other LED/electric lanterns
- Waterproof: All of our lanterns have been through at least 4 downpours and there is absolutely no water inside
Light output:
Note: Each of our patrol sites are about 30-40 feet in diameter
- We put a ToughLight in each patrol site and it was easily enough light
+ Low: Good for low traffic times, when Scouts are doing camp game and adults in site
+ Medium: Good for when scouts are actively around the site. More than enough to see everything (buckets, rope, logs,
chairs). This is the setting we used all week at summer camp.
+ High: Good for when extra light is needed a bit further out. Perhaps collecting wood for setting up camp/fire. We
only used this setting as-needed during the week.
Battery Life:
- We have twice used ToughLight lanterns during our week-long summer camp. The Lanterns EASILY lasted the whole
week with at least another 36 hours of battery left.
- Summer camp use:
~4 hours per night
5 nights
Medium power setting
- These lanterns will VERY easily last during a weekend campout
EDIT - 1.5 years later:
Our troop has been using these lanterns for the past 1.5 years and they have been great!
- The scoutmaster notes they still hold a charge and last a long time.
- They have proven to be tough - as far as I have seen not 1 part has broken on any of the 4 lanterns
EDIT - 3 years later:
My troop is still using these lanterns and they are still working as well as when we bought them.
- We have 4 lanterns and all 4 still hold a charge very well (sitting on shelf for months at a time)
- Still proven tough - still no broken parts on any of the lanterns
