Greenworks newer String Trimmer 21142 not 21102
I've had both gas and electric trimmers that worked as you might expect, with the electric trimmers being to weak to do a good job and the gas being hard to start, way loud and a general pain to maintain and keep running for more than one season. My Ryobi was doing the "runs for a couple of seconds and then quits" until I gave in and cleaned the carb and gas lines. It works ok now but is still super hard to start. This Greenworks 21142 (not 41102) seems to have the right stuff as a solution to a medium sized yard trimmer. Out of the box, I stripped the wing nut that holds the round shaft handle while UN-screwing it, what's up with that. No big deal really, just put a nut on it and it's fine. All metal shaft connector for the trimmer head, no plastic thread issue. Still says incorrect "OFF" direction on the spool head but comes off easily when turned the other way. I did some test trimming and this unit really seems to have a lot of power. Its one speed (fast) and you really need to have long pants and glasses on. I will use for a while and do a follow up. The attachment connection point is different than the one pictured and requires a lot of pressure to engage but it does fit. This feels like a big step up from your usual electric trimmer. Your probably going to want to use a 12/3 (heavy duty) power cord if your using a 100 ft. extension to lower the resistance and heat from the 10 amp motor. The down side of that is that the cord can cost almost as much as the trimmer.
*****Update 09/22/2012 *****
Having used the trimmer for a while, I stand by my comments about its power(It Rips)and ease of use. It "taps" out string well and the original string had lasted up to my last use. I got a shoulder strap which makes it much easier to hold for long periods. The only thing that might be considered a minor issue that the on/off switch has two parts. The top located "unlocking" portion and the main power switch is a bit difficult to hold down for long periods and if your not using gloves it will rash you. Not an issue but a reality, the heavier, higher rated power cord is not super easy to drag around. Just sayen.... But I still rate it 5 stars
