A review list by an engineer
Played with it for couple days now and this is my take.
Pros:
-Pretty simple to use, just hold the record button down until the red light comes on.
-Small size makes it simple to carry around in your pocket with little bulk
-The audio is pretty clear and I was able to record in a large tiled room with 30 people in it and hear the speaker fairly well.
-Plays MP3 files, so you can load it up with music also. It does have 8GB of space after all.
-Comes with a lapel or lavalier mic, headphones, USB cable, and a phone hookup device.
Cons:
-Takes a little while to power up and get to the point where you can hit the record button. I find about 14 seconds to the point it is recording.
-You have to hold the record button down for a second or so to start recording, but you have to release the button for to actually start. So you don't know if you held it down long enough until you release the button and see the red light on.
-You have to hold the stop button down for a couple seconds to actually get it to stop and you don't really know if it will stop until you take your finger off the button - it doesn't stop while the button is depresses
-The time will reset if you turn off the unit. This is actually pretty annoying since I need to sort my conversations by date and time.
-It only records in WAV format. It states 'MP3 function' but that doesn't mean 'MP3 record'.
-The USB connection on the recorder is a mini-usb, not the micro like on most phones.
Even though it looks like a lot more cons than pros, I may be purchasing several more of these to hand out to coworkers. I find that I still have to pass the file through my Audacity program to remove the background noises, but I have to do that on my HD camcorder files as well.
