iPad 3 Case of Awesomeness!!!
Here's a really long review with all the positives/negatives of this case. Cliff Note version of my thoughts...this case is awesome! Read on to know why.
After spending hours comparing and contrasting iPad 3 (3rd Generation) cases on YouTube, Cnet, visiting Best Buy, etc I determined a few things about what I wanted:
1) I wanted my case to protect the front and back of my iPad.
2) I wanted the cover to be a "smart cover" (turn on/off the iPad when opened/closed).
3) I wanted a case that looked professional.
4) I wanted a case that didn't add a lot of bulk or weight.
5) I wanted my iPad's front/glass section to be fully visible and uninhibited by seams or clasps.
6) I wanted my case to take advantage of the iPad's vertical and horizontal view options.
7) I didn't want to spend much $$$.
This is a tall order to fill; even Apple's "smart cover" doesn't achieve most of these requirements. I initially found the Versavu 360 case, and was pleased with most of its features. The 2nd Gen Versavu 360 case was respectably rated 4/5 stars on Amazon, but I found the 3rd gen Versavu case was only getting 2/5 stars (weird I thought...but then found it was because the smart cover feature wasn't working...disappointing). Digging around further, I found that the Devicewear Detour 360 case for the 3rd Gen iPad had Versavu's features, but with a working smartcover, thinner profile, and lower pricetag.
I bought the Detour 360 3rd Gen iPad case, and it's AWESOME! It has all the above features, but also just feels great in my hands. The soft vegan leather is smooth and soft, which makes holding the iPad a pleasure. Before getting this case, I found holding my iPad to be uncomfortable since the sides are rather sharp; this was especially problematic when holding the iPad vertically while reading for hours in iBooks. Now, I can comfortably hold my iPad or use the vertical stand option to balance it on my lap while lounging on the couch or in bed (SWEET!). Since many 3rd gen cases are having problems with the smart cover feature, I'd like to vouch for this case and say it does in fact work very well; you close the cover, and it turns off the iPad, open the case, and the iPad turns back on. Use the strap, and you know your cover won't unintentionally open while in a bag...nice.
Of course, no review would be complete without at least a little whining; so here it is. The viewing angle notches the iPad sits in are not very deep. Typically, this isn't a problem, but if you move or jostle the iPad while in this position, it can cause the iPad to slip out of the viewing angle. I can see how this design issue wasn't easy, given that increasing depth would cause the cover to be thicker/bulkier. Perhaps they should have cut the notches at a steeper angle??? Also, as noted in another Amazon review, I had a little difficulty initially clipping my iPad 3 into the case. After a little teasing though, I did get it completely in, and it does a phenomenal job completely holding my iPad in the case...it's not going anywhere.
My final thoughts- if you read books, play games, and visit sites on your iPad, you should get a case that allows you to utilize the iPad's vertical and horizontal views comfortably. Surprisingly, most cases don't have horizontal/vertical viewing angles; this is a mystery to me. However, this case does that and more at a reasonable price. Sorry for the long review, but for people like me who want to buy one decently priced case and have it work the way it needs to for a completely fulfilling iPad experience, you'll hopefully appreciate these details. Enjoy the case.
The End :)
