Here's what people don't understand...
This product is simply one key ingredient to making theater tasting popcorn at home. What people don't understand is this product is not meant to be sprinkled on top, after the popcorn has popped. It is meant to be mixed with your oil. And to do it right, it should be coconut oil.
Here is my recommendation:
3 tablespoons of Paragon Coconut Oil
1 teaspoon of Gold Medal Flavacol (more or less depending on how salty you like it)
1/2 cup of Paragon Yellow Popcorn (sold in 12.5lb and 50lb bags)
Cook in a stirring popcorn popper. I use the good ol' Original West Bend Stir Crazy. Don't get the Stir Crazy Deluxe or the Presto/Orville poppers. They are terrible. Just read the reveiws on Amazon.
As soon as kernal popping is down to 1 pop a second, cap the bowl and flip it. Don't get concerned if there are a few more unpopped kernals than normal. It's popcorn. It's pretty cheap. If you leave it too long the heat and steam will turn the popcorn stale tasting or soggy.
After cooking, top with Gold Medal's Supur-Kist II. Don't use real butter as it is 15% water and will make your popcorn sogggy. Honestly the topping doesn't have a lot of flavor. It is more for texture but does make a difference.
I don't think I can taste the difference between this and what I get at the theaters.
On a side note, reviews here are for the Original Flavacol Seasoning (2045) but I use the BB or Better Buttery version, product number 2019.
I spent about $56 including shipping for the Paragon popcorn, Flavacol, Paragon Coconut Oil and the Gold Medal Supur-Kist II. The box was very heavy when delivered so I can't complain about the shipping cost. Picked up the Stir Crazy on sale for $20 (local Farm & Fleet). So for $76, I have enough ingredients to make popcorn for a year or two.
UPDATE 5/12/2014: Over a year later and I've yet to run out of this product, making popcorn about 1 a week. However I have switched from using the Stir Crazy to the Presto PowerPop popper. It does a great job and is so much easier to clean up than the Stir Crazy.
UPDATE 2/6/2015: Pitched the Paragon Yellow Popcorn. Too many kernels were not popping and it just began to taste stale. I now use Orville Redenbacher's Gourmet Popping Corn. A bit more expensive but isn't great tasting popcorn worth it? ;-)
UPDATE 2/14/2016: Got another great tip. As I've mentioned I love the Gold Medal's Supur-Kist II. The problem was it comes in a gallon jug. Not easy to pour from the jug. My neat solution was two part. If you own a Sodastream soda maker, save one of your empty concentrate bottles. Then buy a Sodastream pump from Bed Bath & Beyond or wherever else they sell them. Makes the perfect little pump for dispensing the Supur-Kist II. If you don't own a Sodastream then find a friend who owns one and ask them to save you an empty syrup bottle. You can easily pop the Sodastream bottle in the microwave for 30 seconds and heat the Super-Krist if you want. Just be sure to remove the pump before you do. Metal in microwaves don't go together. :-)
