Got Bubbles? Got Issues? A few notes from my experience.
I'm no expert, but I did struggle with the bubbles in the poly issue that vexes us all. You can do research and find the basic tenants of applying poly, but here are a few accidents of mine.
1. Technique really will solve most, but not all, the bubble issue. And a decent brush.
2. Applying in a basement, in winter, with dry heat makes this stuff set up quickly.
3. Try diluting it. I started running low on a non-critical piece. So I dumped some water in (30%?), mixed it up, and slopped it on, violating every single technique thing I'd learned. In fact, I went out of my way to introduce bubbles. Came back 30 minutes later and it was the best application of the entire project.
4. If you DO use proper technique, it goes on super thick. It uses a ton of product. And then you've got to sand and hit it with another coat. I suspect that spraying a diluted version of the product would be the ideal solution. If I even do a project this large again, I'll either wait until summer and use oil-based (outside so I don't turn the house into a toxic waste dump) or buy a sprayer.
5. Super thick makes it look very plastic-y. It's one reason I want to get away from Poly entirely.
