it's really not required or useful. Regardless
I can't speak to the rusting concerns, but just wanted to note that for people that are concerned about the spring mechanism failing, you do not have to use it. There is another hole in the jug cap that faces down into the tray, and that hole has an optional cap. The manufacturer recommends that it remains capped unless you use a filter, but it's not required - normal gravity water feeders work with an open hole, not a spring-loaded one. I can confirm from testing that if you leave that second hole open, the jug will work exactly as expected and always keep the tray filled to the appropriate level, up until the point at which it is empty. I honestly don't know what the purpose of the spring mechanism is; it's really not required or useful. Regardless, this solves the problem with the spring, which many people had issues with.
