Interesting, well documented and easy to read…
Well-written, compelling and meticulously foot-noted, this is an excellent analysis of the Alamo as both a significant historical event and an enduring Texas legend. Many of the less heroic scenarios presented, and some of the authors’ related speculation, have been reported on and accepted in scholarly circles for decades, although the full story and historical context has not been provided in a non-scholarly analysis previously. While the authors clearly have an agenda, and the agenda informs the writing, that does not mean their conclusions are wholly incorrect. Our heroes are rarely the paragons of bravery and virtue that we wish they would be.
Like any analysis of history, much of the book is interpretive and based on other reports and research — products of their time that also were agenda driven. Still, a blanket dismissal or straw man attack without the benefit of informed criticism is an injustice. Reviews that do so, particularly when framed with a “woke liberal” condemnation, should be considered with a jaundiced eye. If using these reviews as part of your consideration, then “Verified Purchase” is a good place to start…
Give it a read. Like it or hate it, it’ll make you think.
