UK Edition vs Masterpiece Theater Edition
Because this is such a helpful comment, but buried in a review, I cut/pasted it under it's own "review".. I had been searching for this particular piece of information on in terms of the Masterpiece Theater version vs the UK edition, and if I hadn't gone into the comment area of one review, I wouldn't have had it answered. Thank you Phyllis Hyde who is the author of this "comment".
"With one of the seasons (I don't remember which one), I had the DVD before the season had finished airing on PBS. I watched each episode from the DVD and immediately followed it up with a viewing on my computer of the PBS episode. There were subtle differences between the editing of the DVD episodes and what PBS was showing. In the PBS version, a particular scene might be slightly longer or slightly shorter than the DVD version. Most scenes were exactly the same. All 4 of my DVDs (Seasons 1 through 4) say "Original UK edition" on the front cover, but all DVDs included the Christmas Special from that Season. Apparently what is seen in the UK is not EXACTLY what we see in the States. In those instances where they were not the same, and the PBS version was slightly longer, the additional seconds of length seemed to be explaining something to the American audience that Americans might not have "gotten" or understood if not for the added emphasis of additional length in that scene -- maybe some custom, manner, or bit of history that the British are familiar with but Americans aren't.
I don't know if they are continuing to do this, but you might want to check it out in Season 5. The first 4 episodes will have aired on PBS before the DVD is available, but as soon as you have the DVD, you can do a side-by-side comparison of your own by re-watching the first 4 episodes on the PBS website and comparing it to an immediate viewing of that episode from the DVD."
