Possibly Saved My Kid
I just had one of these short out so I thought it's probably a good occasion to share my thoughts on this product. These have served the last 8 months in my boys' bedroom as a means for Mom or Dad to turn their reading lights off when it's bedtime and in that role they've actually been fairly useful.
Today I was in another room when the lights flashed momentarily and I heard a pop. I immediately went to my children's room because, well, you go to where trouble can usually be found. There I found that one of the reading lights was off and the remote switch would no longer activate it. So I took it apart to see if I could fix it. What I found was curious.
The solder trace on the back side of the board that connects what looks like a thermal switch to one end of the relay blew completely apart leaving a metallic deposit on the plastic housing. Given that there's nothing here but a thick trail of solder I can only assume that there was a strong internal surge that went found this the path of least resistance. This could very well be an intentional feature of the circuit to protect the user in just this sort of event and if that's the case nice work, because it was very effective.
If not...
<EDIT> Well, as it turns out I was fiddling with the reading lamp it was connected to and the physical switch on it had a massive short (a crackling, flashing, smoking, short). So this remote switch (the bit plugged into the wall) actually served a sacrificial role and prevented some serious injury happening to my little boy. So for that, I'm bumping the stars all the way up. Seriously, thank you, even if it wasn't necessarily intended to function that way.
