5 stars for comfort, 3 stars for sound.
I've been going to a lot of concerts lately and unlike in my younger years I'm actually concerned about my hearing now. I bought these along with the ER20XS Etymotics and the high fidelity Eargasms to test out before some upcoming shows. I've been trying the earplugs with over-the-ear headphones and a variety of music, listening to one song through with each set of plugs and comparing them against cheap foam plugs for reference. It's not science, but it's the best I can do with what I've got.
The Etymotics and the Eargasms both have the upper hand in sound quality. The Vibes are certainly much, much better than the cheap foam plugs, but they do have a more muted, low-end heavy sound, filtering more of those mid and upper ranges than I would like. Vocals are generally clear however. I'd say that the clarity sits somewhere between foam plugs and the Etymotics.
So, at this point in the review, it probably sounds like I'm not a big fan of the Vibes but here's the thing - while the sound is slightly lacking, they are far and away the most comfortable of the three. There is no contest. I can't even quantify how much better they feel.
And the conclusion I'm quickly coming to is that I might value the comfort over the sound fidelity. They sound better enough from foam earplugs that I might willing to give up some of those high end frequencies, just to be this comfy.
EDIT: After testing these in the field at a couple shows, I have to say that the comfort doesn't quite outweigh the drop in sound quality. The Eargasms are the clear winners in actual concert situations. I do keep these Vibes on me as back-ups though and with the small earpieces they fit my son well enough that I'd recommend them for kids who are going to loud shows.
