This is my second Diaper Genie Elite purchase, the lid hinge on our first one broke after 4 years of constant use. As other reviewers indicate there can be a tad of smell escaping but that will only be due to you needing to emptying the bag not a defect of the pail. I only give it 4 stars as I'm disappointed with the marketing scheme they implemented indicating this version (post manufacture of March 2014) is ONLY compatible with the Genie brand refills. However there is a solution to this madness. After I attempted to 'force' a generic refill brand in (to see if it was really true) when I forcefully pulled it out I inadvertently pulled out the sneaky cone shaped insert they have now designed it to have so other refills don't work. So my advice, just pull the cone shape out prior to using and voila now you can use whatever refill you want! The functionality of the diaper pail is not compromised when you do this and when compared (see pictures) to the older version the inside now looks pretty much the same with the exception of the newer version having a small lip - (Left) Old 2011 version (Right) new 2015 version. The final picture is of an Up&Up brand refill in the 2014 version, lid closes perfectly!
