It replaces a 5-year-old Verilux lamp I had which used a replaceable fluorescent-type tube array. This new LED light does NOT have a replaceable light element (no replaceable parts) and is supposed to last the life of the lamp. In fact you can't see the elements which are behind a translucent cover. It has FIVE levels of brightness, not 2 or 3 as others have reported (maybe an earlier model?), and three color levels -- essentially daylight, incandescent and a level in between. The switches are touch-controls grouped at the base of the goose neck. I found the assembly surprisingly easy; assembling two tube sections and the gooseneck/head section with a twist of the wrist, and attaching the base with a clever built-in fastener using a supplied Allen wrench. No screws! And the light at the higher levels is much superior to that of the Verilux lamp it replaced. I think the negative comments I've read should have been directed to the earlier Verilux lamps which this lamp has replaced.
