Terrific hardware and design, pre-alpha software dampens experience
This is my second edit:
I need to really point out at the beginning, how much FUN this projector is! Match it with a FireStick (Amazon has poured HUGE resources into their ecosystem and Alexa, but it's only 40 bucks) and you get one fantastic unit. You can dink with Nebula's evolving ecosystem side loading apps (I am a proud geek,) but Nebual is a "Babe in the Woods." Just grab it and head outside in the evening. A tripod and pull up screen (front or rear projection) help, but a wall will do. A perfect way to beat the heat in the pool or have some fun after dinner on the patio. Or take it to a party. I am getting a PS TV to stream my console. We will also hook it to my studio monitors for movie night in the living room.
That sort of thing.
There are indoor units for fixed installation at the same price that will beat some of the specs, but they are not portable and on battery. That's what the Mars is about!
Here are my other impressions:
First the good: solid and elegant hardware design with decent performance. Brightness is ok, but don’t expect enough for bright days. Really great evening and indoor performance. Definitely designed for use on the go! Definitely a keeper!
What might be confusing: claims of 2000 or 3000 lumens output when the manual spec is 500 ANSI lumens. It turns out that other vendors claim the higher lumen count using different metrics. As their support told me, Nebula wants to cover both places.
The included Android apps are still work in progress. I am trying to sort out streams with sub par quality and stuttering. I did find that the licensed AirPlay mirroring app is slated for an update and tested the beta. It works with iOS 11. But it does not handle DRM (iTunes movies.
The solution: Amazon FireStick It is small, can be powered off the USB port, and works beautifully showing off, what the hardware is capable of. Worth the 40 bucks. Another 2 bucks for an AirPlay app and all is well.
I upgraded to 4 stars, but would like to see more progress on the included firmware.
Bonus request: an adapter to use external battery packs I now have for for charging my devices on the go. USB-C would be fine. Having a custom brick is so yesterday. And Anker is King in that biz.
Suggestion: license the FireTV SW!
Notes: changed to 4 out of 5 because of responsive customer support. They are very supportive and respond quickly. The AirPlay solution I use on FireStick - AirPlay/DLNA Receiver (PRO) - turns out to be the one bundled on the Mars! I got in touch with the author and he is releasing an update that works with iOS 11. He gave me a beta and I verified this on both the FireStick and Mars. However, it does not handle DRMed videos like iTunes movies. Positive movement there.
We've already had several enjoyable evenings on the patio after dinner. Cannot wait to try it with a real screen arriving tomorrow. Also will test it for use for a movie night in the living room. Movies look better projected in the dark. Our 55 in LCD is nice, but does not feel the same.
Attached a picture of the Mars with attached FireStick. Works well.
Third edit:
Another handy addition for the internal apps that require a mouse like Netflix is a little keyboard/mouse combo I had around for typing into consoles: FAVI M2 2.4GHz Wireless USB Mini Keyboard with Mouse Touchpad - USA Version (Warranty) - Black (FMKRFM2) This is confirmed working.
Fourth edit: raised to 5 STARS for the terrific fun we are having with it around the deck and pool on these hot days. Movie nights floating in the pool & spa. Getting a second, smaller screen for easy portability to replace the "poster board" screen solution. Running it off batteries makes it so easy. And the FireStick totally bridges the software issues they will fix eventually.
